Too often, it means a few drops of essential oil or botanical extracts buried in a sea of 30 unregulated compounds labeled as “non-toxic.” Or handmade “miracle creams” promising healing and sun protection—but made in home kitchens, stored in unsterile jars, and lacking any regulatory oversight. It's also problematic—especially for sensitive or chronically compromised skin barriers with acne, eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea.

Even worse? The rising trend of tallow-based sunscreens with no SPF rating.

Here’s the red flag: If a product claims sun protection but doesn’t list an official SPF number, it has not undergone the rigorous testing required by international standards. No ISO 24444 testing. No UV spectrometry. No proof. No insurance. Just guesswork in a blender.

SPF isn’t a vibe. It’s a verified metric.

Without scientific-grade homogenization and UV stability testing, the zinc or titanium in your cream isn’t evenly dispersed across your skin. It's ineffective.
