I finally tried ProCell Microchanneling, a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation therapy similar to microneedling. I booked an appointment with a fellow esthetician, Bethany, at Beyond Beaute Spa on Space Center Boulevard in Houston.
Discovering ProCell Microchanneling
ProCell Microchanneling uses a specialized device with ultra-fine needles to create tiny, controlled injuries in the skin. This process encourages the body to produce collagen and elastin, essential proteins for youthful, resilient skin. Post treatment, Bethany incorporated ProCell’s stem cell growth factor serum (derived from human bone marrow) which supports rapid healing and enhances the skin’s natural repair process, but you can also use your own platelet rich plasma (PRP). What appealed to me most about ProCell Microchanneling was its focus on holistic skin rejuvenation. Unlike Botox or fillers, which only mask aging signs short-term, ProCell works to improve the skin from the inside out to address sun damage, scars, fine lines, and wrinkles.
ProCell Microchanneling vs. Botox and Fillers
As someone who now prefers natural, long-term solutions to skin rejuvenation, I really appreciate how ProCell Microchanneling differs from temporary injectables like Botox and fillers. Here's why:
Microchanneling
Mechanism: Stimulates collagen and elastin production naturally.
Results: Gradual improvement, with smoother, firmer skin after 2–4 treatments.
Longevity: Results last long-term, as they’re based on your body’s natural regeneration.
Side Effects: Temporary redness or swelling, resolved within 1–2 days.
Botox
Mechanism: Temporarily paralyzes muscles
Results: Instant but typically fade within 3 months
Longevity: Requires ongoing maintenance for sustained results
Side Effects: Risk of bruising, swelling, or an overdone look
Fillers
Mechanism: Adds volume to lips, cheeks, or "fills" wrinkles
Results: Instant but typically fade within 6 months to 1 year
Longevity: Requires ongoing maintenance for sustained results
Side Effects: Risk of bruising, swelling, or an overdone look. Additionally, fillers can cause inflammation even years after treatment. Delayed inflammatory reactions, such as nodules, granulomas, or localized swelling can sometimes occur months to even decades post-injection due to immune responses or biofilm formation.
Factors Contributing to Late Inflammation from Fillers
Fillers can be a risky choice for some people due to delayed complications. Some factors that may contribute to these issues include:
1. Bacterial Contamination: Even small amounts of bacteria during the injection process can contribute to delayed inflammatory reactions.
2. Injection Technique: Improper technique can increase the risk of complications, particularly in sensitive areas.
3. Individual Immune System: Some individuals including myself, may have a stronger immune response to fillers, making them more susceptible to late-onset reactions.
What to Do If You Suspect Late Inflammation from Fillers
If you experience unusual swelling, redness, or nodules in areas where you previously had fillers, particularly after a significant amount of time, reach out to a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon immediately. They can evaluate your symptoms and identify the best course of action. Treatment options depends on the cause and severity of the inflammation and may include:
1. Corticosteroid Injections: To reduce swelling and inflammation.
2. Surgical Removal: In severe cases, surgical removal of the filler material may be necessary.
My Microchanneling Experience
ProCell Microchanneling is an investment in my skin’s long-term health.
By accelerating cell turnover and stimulating collagen production, microchanneling provides results without the burning, stinging, and itching after aggressive chemical peels or laser treatments. Personally, I found this to be gentler than microneedling because of the "stamping" mechanism as opposed to gliding needles across the skin, although both treatments can be effective. By the way, I did not need to use Lidocaine or any numbing cream! My treatment took about 40 minutes. Bethany’s expertise and her thoughtful integration of
this gentle cleanser from my new luxury tallow
skincare line,
Beleza by Z ensured my experience was tailored, effective, and soothing. With her guidance, I was able to embrace a treatment that fits seamlessly into my holistic skincare routine.
